Boiler and tender to move to Tyseley

Boiler and tender to move to Tyseley

THE Standard No. 4 boiler that will eventually be carried by No. 3840 County of Montgomery will soon be moved from Oxfordshire to Tyseley Locomotive Works in Birmingham, and we have therefore launched a new appeal to help cover the cost of the transportation.

Donor locomotive No. 5227 has been moved to a new position within the Didcot Railway Centre site to facilitate the lifting of the boiler for eventual movement to Tyseley Locomotive Works. CCT

The boiler, currently fitted to donor 2-8-0T No. 5227, together with No. 3840’s tender chassis (below), has been donated to the CCT by the Great Western Society at Didcot Railway Centre; a site which unfortunately has no direct road access and therefore relies on materials to be taken in and out by rail across Network Rail tracks to/from Didcot West Yard. This is an expensive and logistically-challenging operation, but the CCT has been given a small window of opportunity to get the boiler and tender out in the coming weeks and save on some of the costs by timing the move to coincide with other items arriving into the site.

The price of the rail move out of Didcot, and the onward road transport to Tyseley, is to cost around £6,000.00, a not insignificant sum that will leave quite a dent in the project finances. Consequently we have set up a GoFundMe appeal to help cover some or all of the expense. Details of the appeal can be found here.

Any donations to help cover this cost would be gratefully received.
